An e-mail circulating in various languages and several countries warns of the alleged "danger" of receiving calls from the telephone number 0141-455414. According to the e-mail, if this number appears on the display of your mobile phone and you answer, you will be charged 50 euros, plus 2.5 euros per second until you hang up. The same appeal also warns about the risk of receiving a call from your mobile operator, asking you to enter a code on your phone. According to the appeal, this is a scam to "clone your SIM card". Both claims are false. The same hoax, citing exactly the same number, is circulating in several countries, such as Germany, France, Spain, Portugal and others. In many of these countries, this number is not assigned at all, and therefore no calls can originate from it. Moreover, the billing systems in Italy and in the other countries mentioned in the various versions of the e-mail do not allow a charge of 50 euros on reply. The hoax has been circulating at least since 2000 and has fooled many authorities that one would expect to be more careful before forwarding any such alarm. This hoax went as far as the Italian Parliament and some departments of the Italian police. Sources and links for these facts are provided below.
