Based on the works of Isaac Asimov, I, Robot will focus on Will Smith as techno-phobic Detective Del Spooner, who is called in to investigate the death of a brilliant inventor at US Robotics. The death is ruled a suicide, but Spooner is convinced that a robot killed the scientist, even though this is supposed to be impossible due to the First Law of Robotics. Smith is aided - or hampered - in his investigation by a psychologist, a hologram of the murdered man, and the head of US Robotics, the latter of whom knows that the indictment of one of his robots for murdering a human would mean the end of his company. Spooner is also burdened with the dead scientist's secret, the project on which he was working at his death, namely a robot with a living brain code-named Sonny.
There's not a lot of info available at this early stage on I, Robot other than the briefest of plot synopses and the casting. Judging from the synopsis, it seems there will be some meshing of plots culled from the I, Robot anthology as well as from Asimov's Robots of Dawn series, plus a sprinkling of other science-fiction elements for good measure. It should be interesting to see how the plot details are fleshed out as the movie's release date draws nearer. By that time, we should also be seeing from the marketing campaign whether this will aim more for the general-interest audience or try and bring some of the more serious SF fandom into the theaters. With Will Smith in the lead, 20th Century Fox has an opportunity to perhaps straddle the two and make I, Robot a success with both a wide audience and the science-fiction faithful.
